Every year on (or around my birthday), I’ve gone to a Red Wings game with my dad. We’ve gone for 22 years now, and the Red Wings have never lost. We’re undefeated in birthday games, it’s awesome.

The most memorable of these was for my 9th birthday, in 1997. The game turned out to be the greatest in team history.

The previous year, in 1996, the Wings lost to Colorado in the conference finals, along with Colorado’s Claude Lemieux injured the Wings’ Kris Draper with a dirty hit from behind in the final game. Not only did Darren McCarty and the Red Wings win every round of an epic fight, but Detroit came from behind to win 6-5 (on an OT goal from McCarty). This game would be what the team pointed to as the game that proverbially won them the Cup.

I was there. For my 9th birthday.

Four years later, the Red Wings celebrated their 75th anniversary with stubs devoted to the top moments in team history. One of them happened to be the famous game of March 26, 1997.
